Many men come to Dr. Heil to treat gynecomastia – the medical term for an excess of breast tissue in men. This condition tends to be embarrassing, and the men who live with it often wear loose clothing to try to camouflage larger male breasts.

Dr. Heil can help you finally be free from this condition, and confidently wear tight shirts or go shirtless at the beach, pool, or any other time.

Causes of Gynecomastia

Overlarge male breasts can be the result of several physical triggers, including:

  • Genetics
  • Side effect of medication
  • Aging
  • Weight gain
  • Steroid use
  • Hormonal changes
  • Excess alcohol consumption

Treatments for Gynecomastia

The first step in determining the most effective treatment is a medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause of the condition.

The treatments available to resolve the condition include:

  • Hormone treatment (balancing testosterone and estrogen)
  • Surgical removal of large mammary glands in men
  • Liposuction sculpting of the upper chest zone

Gynecomastia Surgery: What to Expect

When planning gynecomastia surgery, a full medical evaluation must be performed to ensure you are safe to undergo surgery – most patients are. To perform the procedure, most patients are put under general anesthetic, so they do not experience pain or discomfort.

While you are “under,” the excess male breast tissue will be removed surgically with carefully placed incisions, typically around the nipple or beneath the breast so the surgical scar, once healed, is virtually invisible. For some men, excess skin must be removed to fully tighten the upper chest.

After Surgery to Resolve Male Breasts

After surgery, you will awaken from the anesthetic and will be monitored to ensure all is well, after which you are free to return home to recover. You will be wearing a surgical compression bandage to hold your new sculpted chest in place while it heals.

You will need a friend or family member to drive you. For most patients about one week of recovery is needed before returning to work, while other patients may require a little longer. You will be provided with full post-surgery instructions, and Dr. Heil will be monitoring your progress with follow-up appointments.
