Many men who come to the Center for Hair Restoration choose our practice as we offer the most advanced treatments available, all in one place. Low level light therapy (LLLT) is an effective, non-surgical treatment for men who are struggling with hair loss.

LLLT harnesses the healing power of red light waves to trigger healthier hair growth. This treatment has proven to be very effective, increasing blood flow to the area so the follicles get more vital nutrition, so they become stronger, healthier, and once again begin producing thick, healthy hairs.

Dr. Brian Heil has dedicated his professional life to helping people with cosmetic and surgical enhancements, along with advanced hair restoration techniques. Many hair restoration surgeons use traditional methods, which while effective, have a long recovery time, leave a scar on the back of the head, and often had a less-than-natural appearance. He has chosen from the best of the latest generation of treatments, including the use of low level light therapy, singly, or in combination with other treatments.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon who is known as the “go-to” surgeon for men, his array of hair restoration treatments makes it possible for men at any stage of hair loss to regain confidence, restore a more attractive hairline, fill in thinning or balding areas, or maintain a healthy head of hair for the long term. How Does LLLT Work?

Low level light therapy, officially called “photobiomodulation,” involves exposing the cells or tissue to low levels of red and near infrared light. It is called “low level” as the light density is less than is emitted for other purposes.

Also called “cold laser” therapy, this light does not heat the tissues as does other types of lasers. This type of light has been proven to stimulate rapid cells growth, increased metabolic activity, and provide greater levels of oxygen to the blood cells. These effects cause the hair follicles to regenerate and begin functioning as they should, rather than going dormant.

Androgenetic Alopecia, or “Male Pattern Baldness”

Male pattern baldness is a genetic condition that is the most common reason for hair loss in men, affecting over 50 percent of the male population who are 40 years old or above.

Male pattern baldness moves through several stages, which are:

Anagen phase

This is the growth phase of a producing hair follicle.

Catagen stage

The transition phase, when the follicles begin to shrink and produce finer, thinner hairs (vellus hair).

Telogen phase

The follicles become dormant.

LLLT: Triggering Natural Hair Growth

The light waves used in LLLT have the unique ability to be absorbed by the molecules making up the hair follicles. The light penetrates into the scalp, triggering the skin’s stem cells – the cells responsible for hair follicle regeneration.

The body has innate healing powers, but these can diminish with time.

The regenerative processes come into play with LLLT by treating the weaker hair follicles that are producing fine, wispy hairs.

This treatment works best on men in the early stages of hair loss, who have noticed the hair produced is looking thin, fine, and weak. Find out more about LLLT – it is just one of many hair restoration options available at the Center for Hair Restoration in Pittsburgh.
